Roof Caving / Roof Crush Accidents

A strong roof or roll bar protects occupants in a rollover accident. When the vehicle rolls over onto its roof, the strong roof or roll bar should prevent collapse of the roof and preserve the occupants space. When a car, truck or SUV roof fails to maintain its structural integrity under these conditions, roof crush or roof caving occurs.

There are few regulations when it comes to roof crush standards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently proposed the first change in vehicle roof strength standards in more than three decades. Sadly, the proposed rule would require vehicle roofs to be only marginally stronger than they are today. Some sources feel up to 70 percent of existing vehicles will require no increase in roof strength at all, thus failing the NHTSA's goal of curbing the 10,000+ deaths per year caused by roof caving.
